The Community Initiatives Fund makes knowledgable and effective investments in community-based initiatives throughout Saskatchewan that strengthen the capacity of communities.
The Community Initiatives Fund visualizes a future of vibrant, resilient, sustainable and proud Saskatchewan communities whose citizens are engaged and actively working to enhance quality of life.
Since it was established in 1996, the Community Initiatives Fund has distributed more than $204 million to support 510 communities across Saskatchewan.
CIF is a Special Purpose Fund created by the Government of Saskatchewan through The Lotteries and Gaming Saskatchewan Corporation Act, serving to distribute a portion of the net profits generated by the Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation for the benefit of Saskatchewan people and communities. Annually, CIF receives 25% of the net revenues from casinos Regina and Moose Jaw via the Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation to distribute through two grant programs. Since our establishment in 1996, we have distributed more than $204 million to 510 communities across the province. More than 21% of the province’s population benefit annually from CIF support.
The Community Initiatives Fund’s (CIF) work and support reaches lands covered by Treaties 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 10, the traditional lands of the Cree (Nêhiyawak; Nêhithawak; Nêhinawak), Dakota and Lakota (Sioux), Dene (Chipewyan), Nakota (Assiniboine), and Saulteaux (Nahkawininiwak) peoples, as well as homeland of the Métis. Today, these lands continue to be the shared Territory of many diverse peoples from near and far.
In 2021, the Community Initiatives Fund celebrated twenty-five years of granting and leadership in Saskatchewan. A lot has changed since since the creation of CIF, but what hasn’t changed is our commitment to supporting community-based, community-led initiatives that enhance wellbeing for Saskatchewan citizens.
As of March 31, 2021, CIF had approved a total of $175 million in grants to support the delivery of programming, services, commemorative events, and facility improvements in 510 communities across the province.
Take a look back at CIF’s longstanding history and reflect on the years to come! Our milestones, relationships, and learnings are explored through the Celebrating 25 Years publication.
